Chelsio Update, Decemeber 2021

NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) designed to efficiently support hyperscale remote SSDs, has become the default protocol for disaggregated storage within a cloud infrastructure. Multiple network transports are supported by NVMe-oF - iWARP RDMA, RoCE v2, Fibre Channel and TCP/IP. The enterprises want to deploy the most cost-effective and efficient networking transport available to maximize their return on investment (ROI). TCP/IP (NVMe/TCP) meets these requirements with its lower deployment costs, reduced design complexity and its ability to use the existing infrastructure. Chelsio's state-of-the-art TOE (TCP/IP Offload Engine) is fully capable of offloading TCP/IP processing to the NIC (NVMe/TOE), including connection set-up and tear-down, and all the exception handling thus, freeing up the CPU resources. The freed-up CPU resources can be utilized to run software defined storage and application software. In addition to CPU savings, T6 Unified Wire adapters with NVMe/TCP Offload increase bandwidth and IOPs while reducing application sensitivity to packet drops and jitter on the wire.

SDC 2021

Chelsio showcased its 100G storage technologies, NVMe/TCP, NVMe-oF (iWARP) and iSCSI at Storage Developer Conference (SDC) 2021, empowering High-ROI, highly effective application deployments. Chelsio and StorageIO presented a Birds of a Feather (BoF) Session discussing the challenges, issues and key priorities for legacy and software defined datacenter environments and how NVMe/TCP using Chelsio Offload addresses them.

Chelsio announced performance testing results of 100GbE NVMe/TCP using T6 TOE solution in Kernel and User Modes, showing unparalleled performance and CPU efficiency. This allows businesses to migrate to industry-standard networking, attain enormous scale, remove any vendor lock-in, and support full security for data-at-rest and in-motion. StorageIO has additionally reviewed and validated the Chelsio results and published a detailed article explaining how the T6 TOE enabled solution boosts storage performance while reducing host CPU usage. The key advantages that NVMe/TOE solution provides are:

•   Remote, disaggregated, networked NVMe-oF storage with performance comparable to local storage.
•   Reduced CPU overhead, resulting in cheaper CPUs, and more cores left over for host storage software.
•   Better effective network utilization and server storage I/O performance.
•   Respond to dropped or reordered packets at silicon speed via TOE and isolate host and network performance from each other.
•   Boost performance productivity while reducing costs and complexity.
•   Enable more affordable entry level solutions, or higher performing scalable solutions.
•   Free up CPU resources to run your software defined storage and application software.

Above and beyond what regular NIC's are targeted for, T6 is ideally suited for below applications:

•   iSCSI Offload at 100Gb
•   NVMe-oF at 100Gb
•   Long distance replication at 100Gb over public or private networks
•   Encrypted communication at 100Gb
•   Storage encryption
•   Azure Stack support
•   Full featured TOE support at 100Gb
•   Classification/filtering offload of up to 1 million flows
•   Traffic shaping/pacing offload

•   A complete Unified Wire solution for latest Linux Distributions was released.

Recent Publications

•   Chelsio published the performance results of NVMe/TCP using Chelsio Offload solution for both Kernel and User modes. With more than 2.9 million IOPs at the 4K I/O size, only a 8.69 μs delta latency between remote and local storage access, up to 50% CPU savings, exceptional jitter handling capabilities, the Chelsio solution proves to be the best-in-class at providing the next generation, scalable storage network over standard and cost-effective Ethernet infrastructure with an efficient processing path.
•   Chelsio published a paper on how the iWARP enabled T6 25G Unified Wire and Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) enable a low-cost, plug-and-play, high-performance Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) solution using standard Ethernet infrastructure.
•   Chelsio published a benchmark of iSCSI offload vs. no offload for a class of real world applications. The results clearly demonstrated the necessity of offload for 100Gb iSCSI.
